This time of year is full of new growth, bright green leaves kept clean by spring showers, green grasses and ferns, morel mushrooms, glacier lillies, balsam root, indian paintbrush, wild currant, wild roses, dogwoods trees in full and glorious bloom. There is a constant parade of changing color, changing skies with clouds and spring storms. The mountains still have a cap of snow. The creeks and the Stehekin River begin to rage from the snow melt. The spray from Rainbow Falls will soak you from fifty feet away. Even an umbrella won’t protect you. The deer are getting sleek and fat on the new growth, the young bucks are getting their antlers. Soon we will see fawns following their moms through the woods. The black bears are starting to wander the valley looking for a meal. Cow elk and their yearlings can be spotted at the airstrip. All of this can be yours to see with a visit to the Stehekin Valley during spring.
